The term, ‘Edda’, was later ascribed to Snorri’s work by a different author in a manuscript from the early 14th century CE, the Codex Upsaliensis, which contained a copy of Snorri’s Edda within it. Snorri Sturluson’s work was the first of the two manuscripts to be called Edda, however, scholars are uncertain how this exactly came about. The Poetic or Elder Edda was written down circa 1270 CE by an unknown author. The Prose or Younger Edda dates to circa 1220 CE and was compiled by Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic poet and historian. Secondly, the pod itself has no airlock and no way in other than via direct beam-in or out. First-off, the ancient alien tech has the power to send transporter signals via subspace, possibly over vast distances. Instead we are faced with a simple conundrum that must be unraveled- a high-tech but derelict space pod grabs Geordi and Data and teleports them out of sensor range, bringing them into contact with a man who reveres them as ‘The Builders’ and wants nothing more than their approval for his use of their ‘gifts’. ![]() We occasionally dip in and out of characters heads, but never for extended periods. But indeed Woods is horrific, and disturbing, and to an extent the full horror of the book comes so late in the story that one cannot help be, if not horrified in the moment of realization, then horrified in the implications that come days afterward. It is not horrific (or horror-ific) in the sense of decapitated heads or lopped off hands. ![]() Monsters aplenty, though whether in the box office Woods would be deemed horror or instead fantasy/sci-fi is debatable. The previous books in their own ways have challenged the horror genre, but Carmen Maria Machado and Dani’s The Low, Low Woods is something else. Q: What did your travel to India and Nepal bring to your story?Ī: I spent a month in India and Nepal tracing Lakshmi's steps- going from a poor, isolated village in the foothills of the Himalayas all the way to the teeming red-light district of Calcutta. But more than five years ago, when I had a chance meeting with a photographer who was working undercover to document the presence of young girls in brothels overseas, I knew immediately that I wanted to do what no one else had done so far: tell this heartbreaking story from the point of view of one individual girl. This war has been raging for a long time and the King is so close to his objective, he can practically taste victory. The heretics loathe all that the religious land stands for and the King of their land has made it his mission to wipe out his enemy. It’s also a multi-layered story that features a religious war, political intrigue, morally gray characters, and a pretty hefty dose of secrets and lies.Īt the center of the novel is a war between two lands, one is a land filled with heretics who rely on blood magic, while the other, a more religious land, is filled with those who worship saints and with clerics who can communicate with the saints and borrow their powers.
